How to DIY the Drop Hem Jeans Trend (with Denim You Already Have) #denimdiy #drophem #diy

The drop hem jeans trend is still going strong. You know the look – the darker denim shade at the bottom of unhemmed jeans made popular by Rachel Comey.

Well, there’s an easy DIY way to get a similar look using a pair of jeans you already have! You just need the right pair of jeans and a…

…seam ripper! That’s pretty much it.

So how do you figure out what type of jeans will work for this project? Well, technically any pair of jeans will work…and lots of other pants too (not just jeans). But if you want a visual line of demarkation, like the ones in these photos, you’ll need a slightly lighter pairs of jeans that is true denim.

How to DIY the Drop Hem Jeans Trend

Grab a paid or denim jeans and a seam ripper and start gently ripping out the bottom seam from the pants. Do just a little bit at a time, and pull it back to determine if you have a darker denim underneath before undoing the entire hem.

If the color on the inside (which will be at the very bottom of the pants when finished) is what you had envisioned, rip the remaining stitching off the bottom of the pant (on both pant legs) and unravel the remaining material.

Fashion trends can be so weird. I can hear my grandmother (who would be 114 were she still living) saying ” You paid good money for a pair of pants that came with a raggedy hem and holes in them……
on PURPOSE? Child, people are going to think that we’re so poor that we have to dress you out of the rag bin! ” Lol!

Fashion is definitely subjective, kddomingue. Which is what’s so great about it, I think. Everyone has an opinion…including grandmas. 🙂 But I really love this trend, and think the DIY version we created is a great way to get a similar look without having to spend a ton of money.

I use this trick on my young sons pants. He is at the age were all he does is grow out of his jeans. This gives me a little more time before I have to purchase him a new pair
