6 Ways to Spruce Up Your Entryway for Fall

Entryway makeover

A common area that I often see underutilized in the style department is the entryway. Although you may pass by it every single day, for some reason, it doesn’t often get the love and attention it deserves.

So, I put together a handful of ideas for sprucing up an otherwise, basic or blank space, using a combination of items you’d already have around your house mixed with pieces that you can easily order online. So you don’t even have to leave the house to take a ‘before’ space to an ‘after’. Sound good?

You’d be amazed how easy it can be to add a personality to a space, all without having to buy huge pieces of furniture to make things look fresh and cool. The idea is to use what you’ve got for the big stuff (your couch, chairs, tables, etc) and use accessories to add layered interest and style. And I’ve partnered with Canvas on Demand to show you exactly how to do it on your own.

Pillow patterns!

Pillows

Pillows can be added to ANY room of a house (with the exception of the bathroom – but if you give me a few minutes to think about it, I’m sure can come up with a place for pillows there too) for an instant upgrade.

All of mine are from Canvas on Demand – they have a huge selection of pillow prints available AND you can customize the colors for ANY pillow design they carry! Which is a feature I completely took advantage of. It makes things SO much easier when pulling accessories together, because you can choose your own custom colors to match all of the other items in the room perfectly. Kind of a game changer, right?

Stacked!

Seating (if desired or needed)

Seating is completely optional of course, but since pillows are on my list, generally seating would need to be somewhere in the mix. I like benches for entryways because you can add textiles and still have plenty of room to sit down and take off your shoes, put down your purse, etc. But a single chair will do in a pinch – especially in small spaces.

Colorful artwork

Wallpaper + Artwork

I am seriously into wallpaper at the moment. Especially when it involves customization. I used the removable wallpaper in Cracked, but I also really like the Polka Dots print (which you can again customize to any colors you want for a totally custom look).

As for artwork, I ended up using a calendar because I felt like that was a practical piece to have in the entryway and still has a design-y / art quality to it. But framed photos or prints would work just as well.

That plant life.

Plants + Planters

If you know me at all, you know that I am never short on planters (at home or at the studio), so I already had a good amount of plants and planters to choose from. There are loads of affordable planters available online though (and locally at home improvements stores even), if you don’t happen to have any that work with the area you’re styling.

I like to stick with at least a grouping of three small to medium size plants, unless you happen to have one super large one that can take the place of three. If you do go with several plants though, remember to vary the height and textures of the planters to keep the eye moving / make things more visually appealing.

Lighting

Lighting

Lighting is a great way to add personality to any space and also can warm up an otherwise drab section of your home. I like using cloth covered pendant light cords, to keep things simple (you hang them at any height you want just by wrapping the cord around a nail), but sconces, table lamps, and floor lamps are great options too.

Colorful rugs

Rug or Runner

A cool rug or runner is a great way to cozy up a small space, while also giving the area definition. If you have hardwood floors, a rug adds a nice cushion for tired feet, and if you have carpet, a rug over carpet can still look great. It’s a nice way to break up a monotone floor – carpet, tile, or hardwood.

Hi Liz. I made the bench a while back and shared the DIY here: http://www.papernstitchblog.com/2016/02/17/take-seat-make-budget-friendly-bench-hour/

Hi! Where is your bench from?

Liz

Hi Michelle! The calendar is actually not part of the wallpaper, though that would be super cool! I just didn’t snap a picture before I hung it up, on top of the wallpaper. 🙂 Glad you like it though.
