My Grandma

my grandma

This last week or so hasn’t been the greatest for me. I struggled with whether or not I should even talk about it here, but ultimately decided it was too important to me not to mention. So here it goes…

My grandma passed away last week. And this loss has hit me pretty hard. We were very close. I don’t really even know what else I can say, except for this…

When I was little we lived less than a block away from each other. My mom or dad would watch me walk a few houses down and I’d turn the corner to find my grandma outside waiting a few more houses away. I think that time with her when I was little made a big impact on the kind of relationship I had with her for the next twenty something years. She was funny and strong-willed. And she would ask you if you wanted something to eat every half hour. ‘Let grandma fix you something.

I remember sitting next to her at her dining room table before I was old enough to have my feet touch the ground, as she worked on quilt patches and we drank iced tea. No doubt her special cinnamon crust she made every time I came to visit was in the oven baking too.

I’m so happy for all the memories that I have of her, but sad that there won’t be any more. I was fortunate to have seen her just days before she passed away, on the way back from my trip to Craftcation. But I really can’t believe I will never get another chance to see her again. I’m going to miss her terribly. And I’m not sure how much that fact has even sunk in yet.

Thank you Brianne. I am really sorry to hear about your grandmother as well. It is definitely a tough time.

Oh, Brittni, I’m so sorry. I lost my grandmother last year and its never, ever easy to lose these people who were such role models for us girls growing up. Stay strong – it gets easier.

Brianne

Thanks for sharing your story Martha. Grandmas have a special place in our hearts. Don’t they?

I’m so sorry Brittni. My grandma died when I was 15. She was my crafty grandma — I still have a stuffed dog that she made for me. It really makes me smile — each of its legs are a different length (not on purpose). You’d think that, at 48, I’d get rid of the worn out pink polyester dog, but I keep it in my sock drawer and I look at it, and remember her almost every day. Nothing can take away that 🙂

I am sorry for your loss, brittni…my heart goes out to you as you grieve. I lost my grandmother too, years ago. I don’t think I’ve ever cried as hard before, or since. The priest who came to say some last words comforted us by reminding us that our relationship and connection we had would never go away. May you find some small comfort in these words too. Hugs, jan

I’m so sorry for your loss, Brittni.
I never knew my grandmothers (on either side). You were lucky to have her just down the street from you. Sounds like she was a special person to have in your life!

Take care,

Right there with you Hun, so sorry to hear about your loss, I lost my Grandpa on the 16th of March. Growing up he was my best friend, we did so much together, like you and your Grandma. I shared my loss on our blog at the time, I am glad you decided to share with us. I hope it helps you come to terms with your loss. Some how writing down all the best memories I had of him really helped me, It set my mind to rest knowing that I wouldn’t forget them.
Lots of love to you and your family <3

I completely know how you feel. My grandma passed away on Feb 28 at the ripe old age of 96. Last night, my family celebrated her 40th day anniversary and I spent the whole evening trying not to cry into my dinner. It seemed so quite without her asking if anyone wanted anything to eat or drink (despite the fact that they were all eating and drinking) every 5-10 minutes (oh, dementia). She moved down to California from the Philippines to live with my family when I was two months old. I hear it’s supposed to get worse before it gets better, but that it does get better. My heart goes out to you and your family. If you need someone to talk to I have an ear to hear.

Joey

Thank you Shayla. So sorry to hear about your grandfather. I 100% agree with you that it feels good to talk about it and the comments and kind words have really brought a smile to my face as well.

I know exactly how you feel. My grandparents on my Mom’s side helped raise us so they are in a way like second parents. My Grandmother is still with us but my Grandfather passed away last June and it’s still sad and strange to me.

Loosing someone you love is never easy but it’s someone you are very close to, it’s particularly hard.

I’m glad you decided to share this because it’s good to talk about I think. My thoughts and prayers are with you and your family.

Shayla

Thank you Wendy.

Thanks Chelsea. I was thankful to have been able to see her for a couple of days right after I left LA the other week but still can’t believe I won’t have the chance to see her again. I am sorry to hear about your grandma as well. As you said, grandmas are most definitely special.

Sending so much love, doll. I lost my Grandma last year and it’s a spot that no one could ever replace — Grandmas are beyond special. Mine was always telling us to “rest our eyes” when she thought we needed a nap. 🙂 I love that you chose to share here — after all, we’re only human. And we’re all sending you the biggest support. xo

You are so right Audrey. Thank you for stopping by and sending some kind words and virtual hugs my way.

So sorry to hear this, Brittany – I know exactly how you feel, our grandmas seemed very much alike, it’s hard to loose the people that made such an impact on us when we were little. Take it easy on yourself, take the time you need to grieve her loss. Sending you lots of hugs.

Thanks for sharing your story Nykisha. Sorry to hear about your loss as well.

I’m so sorry for your loss! But I hope you find comfort in knowing that you do have those memories to cherish with her forever. I too lived right next door to my grandmother my entire life. We played outside of her house everyday, and she always had lemonade and iced tea ready for us when we were done. She was my family’s backbone ….

She passed away while I was at college, and I had seen her a few weeks prior to that. Although it’s been 9 years now, I still miss her more than anything, more than any words can ever say. And honestly, every time I even think about her, her name, her house, her memory, a tear comes to my eye.

She also loved to quilt and she’s the one who taught me to crochet! So by starting up my store on Etsy, where I feature crocheted and knitting items, I feel like I will always have a little piece of her with me every day.

Once again, please accept my condolences, I know how hard this is for you!

Take care,
Nykisha

I am so sorry to hear about your loss Brittni. My grandmother has also not been well recently and I can’t imagine the day that I won’t have her in my life. Grandmothers hold a very special place in our lives, and as you said, you have so many wonderful memories of your time with yours. It sounds like there was a love there that will always remain, no matter if you can’t be together physically. Keep cherishing those memories.
