Something from Nothing

Today, I’ve asked Lisa Jacobs to share her journey to success – from little more than an idea and $100 in her pocket, to living her passion and finding her purpose. I hope you find inspiration in her story…

I’m Lisa Jacobs of Marketing Creativity. I’m so excited to be here today, as Papernstitch is such a lovely resource for all things handmade. I started my own handmade business in 2010, called the Energy Shop. I fell in love with that spirited little spot as a creative outlet: I could express myself and do something I enjoyed all at once. Consequently, I fell in love with Etsy and the handmade community. I quickly realized that creating with a sense of passion and purpose is something everyone did, every day.

The whole idea of a world fueled by creativity feels true to me. I believe each of us has something extraordinary to offer.

In fact, my motto is: Get Paid to Be You.

Once the Energy Shop was up and running, I started to consider the possibilities for my creative business. I thought, what if I could build my own career? I’m a mother of four, and I wondered, what if I could always be present for my family, and chase my dreams too? What would it be like to create my own work-at-home business?

What would it be like to create your own work-at-home business?

I went for it, and I made 450 sales in my first three months of business. I went on to make more than 1,000 in the first year, and today I’m at nearly 3,000 sales after two years. I quickly realized that I loved the business side of my shop as much as I loved making the products that I sell.

I started with $100 worth of materials, and in just two years, I’ve earned more than $60,000. My days are overflowing with passion and purpose. The biggest lesson I’ve learned along the way is that:

We all deserve more LIFE! in our life.

If you have a passion, a hobby, or your own handmade shop, I encourage you to fall head over heels in love with it. Believe in your own purpose and reach for the stars. I built Marketing Creativity to help you build the career of your dreams, and I offer a few free tools to help you get started. Success is yours for the taking because …

Somebody is out there, right now, just waiting to pay you to do what you love to do.

Each one of us is creating something out of nothing. Two years ago, I didn’t have a small business. I just had an idea. I invested my time, energy, and a little bit of money–just as many of you did. It’s something to be proud of, whether you’re waiting for your first sale, or celebrating your first thousand. I hope you’ll share your creative something with the rest of the world.

Thank you, Brittni, for sharing your space with me today! I wish you all much success and all the best.

i love the “get paid to be you” moto! i really think that is the key to success. i remember i stared doing embroidery and everyone said “you should sell that.” i was also at the time wanting to start my own business but i was bogged down by looking at what everyone else was doing, crying “every idea is taken” and “oh, i couldn’t do that.” i thought who would want to buy embroidered items? then one night laying in bed an idea struck me. i thought, embroidery is me, this idea is me. it was the first time two such important things intersected for me creatively. the rest is history and i do it full time – supporting me and my three kids from my home and loving every minute of it : ) thanks for sharing, this was fabulous!
