A Minimal Mid-Century Master Bedroom Makeover

A minimal mid-century master bedroom makeover from Paper & Stitch

Admittedly, it seems like every six months or so, I get an itch to redo one (or more) rooms in the house. Honestly, I can’t help it… I’m perfectly accepting of change in one (and possibly only?) aspect of my life and it’s on the home decor front. And with having just finished up our guest bedroom makeover, I couldn’t stop myself from giving Jeff and I’s bedroom a quick facelift too. It’s a sickness really.

So, I partnered with Parachute, an amazing home textiles company with the coziest bedding you can imagine, for a master bedroom update that I’m certain will last longer than all the others. Even Jeff is fully onboard. Yay!

This time around, I paired everything down – erring toward a more refined color palette of neutrals, mixed with just a few pops of color. And playing up natural textures and finishes we already had, with a few new pieces that we’ll have for the long haul.

That said, this is still (kind of) a work in progress. I’m almost there…just need to frame the piece above the bed and eventually switch out my inexpensive rug solution with the rug of my dreams. BUT I’m not in the market for a $2,000+ rug at the moment, so my DIY solution will work for now.

I just bought two identical 5×7 rugs and laid them next to each other on the floor to form one large 10×7 rug for under the bed. It’s not perfect, but it was under $350 total, and fills out the room pretty well for now.

Aside from the rug and some new (matching) nightstands from Ikea, we changed out all the bedding. In part because I wanted a change. AND in part because Luna (our 11 year old pitbull) loves to play on the bed. As a result, she’s ripped many, MANY sheet sets to shreds over the years, with her craziness… the girl plays hard. Eeeek! So, we got some new ones from Parachute. And let me tell you, they are AMAZING.

We got the Percale Venice Set in white (which includes a fitted sheet, duvet cover, and two pillowcases), plus white Essential Shams (which are quilted), and Euro Shams (in sand). And the whole setup feels straight from a fancy hotel, which I’m super into. Sleep is VERY important to me…I could practically sleep through the weekend if someone would let me. So, cozy AF bedding is pretty important in my book.

And if you’re looking for other super soft textiles, I have their alpaca throw in natural. It’s crazy soft and Franz likes it too, as you can see. :)

Other than that, with the exception of the black and white Acapulco chair (which is new), we already had the furniture…two vintage dressers, a Blu Dot mirror, and our platform bed frame. And the accessories for the most part were already in the space too – they just needed some rearranging.

It’s such a smart idea to place two identical rugs together to make one. Your bedroom is looking quite cozy I must with your new parachute bedding!

So pretty + fresh!! Where is your modern circular table lamp from?

Paring down my belongings and achieving a more minimal lifestyle are my goals for 2017. The neutral color palette that you chose fits in so well with that approach. I’m in LOVE with that throw; it looks so cozy!

Where are those rugs from? Love the look and the color!

Colleen M Clark | December 15th, 2016 at 7:48 pm

I love what you did with the rug! It doesn’t look like it’s two separate pieces at all!

Lindsay | December 21st, 2016 at 4:30 pm

Hi Colleen and Lindsay. The rugs are from Target. I couldn’t find a link online to the exact ones I used, which is why it isn’t linked up in the post. :( I purchased them in store, so I’d recommended checking a local store out to see what you can find. Hope that helps!

You know, usually I’m not into mid-century decor, but I’m really, really digging the vibes of this room! This makes me actually rethink my take on mid-century decor…

Happy to hear that this makeover is making you rethink it, Sofia. I’m a big believer in being able to incorporate nearly any style into your home, if done right.

Where is the gorgeous artwork above the bed from??

Claire | January 11th, 2017 at 6:09 pm

Hi Claire. The print is a collab between Debbie Carlos and Scout & Catalogue. Here’s the link: https://store.debbiecarlos.com/collections/guest-artist-posters/products/guest-artist-scout-catalogue-a-study-in-marbling

Where is the black lamp from? I love it and am looking for something just like it.

Kristina | January 18th, 2017 at 8:01 pm

Hi Kristina. The black lamp is from West Elm (I’ve had it for a year or two now though, so I don’t know if it’s still available).

Brittni | January 18th, 2017 at 9:54 pm

I love how you put it all together!

Elaine Turner | January 19th, 2017 at 12:02 pm

A similar bedroom is my dream. All is simple laconically, but there are bright spots, pleasant structures.

Hardman | January 20th, 2017 at 7:27 pm

Hi Brittni, very cool, love the vibe! Madly into minimal styling, just love the green planter on the dresser, where can I find one?! Thanks :)
