Make This: Woodgrain Gift Tags DIY

DIY // woodgrain gift tags

A couple of days ago, I went to a local meetup for creatives, hosted by Jordan, and afterwards Caroline took us to this paper place across the street.

Of course, I found a hundred things that I ‘needed’ right away… They had the wrapping paper (by Rifle Paper Co) that I’ve been eyeing for months, so I bought a couple of rolls and then immediately got to work on a DIY that I could use with my new wrapping paper. Styling tip side note: I mention this in my tutorials class…Anything and everything can (and should) be used as a backdrop for styling small shoots and tutorials.

So I grabbed a very random material from my craft closet, vinyl siding samples I snagged from a home improvement store, and made these woodgrain gift tags. I know the holidays are pretty far off, but I can’t help but think that these would be great for Christmas packaging when the time comes. And in the not so distant future, they work as gift tags for birthday gifts and housewarming presents.

Oh, and did I mention that these vinyl siding samples are totally free?! Move over paint swatches, siding samples are about to give you a run for your money. I’m predicting lots of DIY uses for these. Here’s how to make your own gift tags…

DIY // woodland gift tags tutorial

Supplies: vinyl siding samples in various wood finishes, scissors, small handheld drill, string for tying to packages

How-To: The process is super simple…Just cut a tag shape from the siding sample using a sharp pair of scissors. And then drill a centered hole at the top so you can poke a string through to attach to presents, gift bags, etc. Note: It took me a minute to get used to drilling through this material, so you may want to do a practice run on an extra piece. My second try was much better than the first in terms (see photos). And I also tried using my paper awl instead of a drill, but the material was too thick. So definitely use a drill for this one.

And here are the finished tags. I used a suede cord instead of string to change it up a little bit…

And that’s it. Now you have a woodland inspired gift tag to add to pretty much any gift you can think of.

Thanks you two! This probably goes down as the most random ‘craft supply’ I’ve used to date. Ha!
