Painting, Pastels, and After Work Rituals

Painting with pastels

This post is sponsored by Skinny Cow.

A while back, I started painting again (just for fun), as a way of getting out of my head and unwinding from my schedule. It’s been really nice to have something to zone out to lately, before I head home – almost like a transition stage between work life and home life, if that makes sense.

When I’m at work, I usually have a lot going on and the mood feels very go-go-go. So, it’s often hard for me to move from that work mentality, straight home into ‘relaxation mode’. Sometimes it feels like too big of a jump. You know?

Which is why painting in between the two has been a good way to make that transition feel more steady. At the end of the day, I’ll set myself up with a handful of supplies and a little bit of paint (or ink) and then I just zone out with a brush in my hand for 5, 15, sometimes 30 minutes. It’s nothing crazy, just a little bit of time at the end of each work day to get my mind out of it’s (often) frazzled state and into a better place.

Salty and sweet

Do you do something like this at the end of each day too? I’m so curious to know what you do to strip down the craziness from your day to day and relax for a while. Do you have an activity you always do or maybe an everyday  indulgence you treat yourself to?

Skinny Cow wants to know too! They reached out to ask about sharing an unfettered moment to celebrate #TheNewSkinny campaign, which is about stripping down to show the real you  – the same way they are stripping away all the unfamiliar-sounding ingredients in their treats for a more simplified, indulgent approach to delicious.

I love their mission for a more simplified approach, and can most definitely use this motto in my own life more often. Ha!

Because you know, a sweet treat never hurts at the end of a long day. My faves right now are the Simply Amazing Salted Caramel Pretzel Bars – always have these in my studio freezer when I need a pick me up.

They’re packed with rich, creamy caramel, chocolate, pretzels, and fudge. Oh, and ice cream too, which is kind of perfect because #NationalIceCreamDay is today (July 16th). Visit your local grocery store to purchase NEW Skinny Cow frozen treats, or visit SkinnyCow.com to learn more.

Working with my hands really calms me down at the end of the day, or playing guitar!

I paint on an evening too! I normally just do an abstract with ink to keep it simple. They’re also a nice way to fill up my sketch book so I don’t feel anxious about working in it. Those Skinny Cow treats look like the perfect companion to a wind down activity

They are so delicious, Wendy. My husband and I have been eating Skinny Cow for years, but I had never tried the salted caramel pretzel bars until recently. They are really, really good.

Girl, I feel you about the daily go-go-go!! A glass of wine and a home cooked meal with the hubby is all I need to #winedown. 🍷🍝 We’re also fond of dark chocolate-dipped pretzels for dessert. 😂

This is a new concept for me, and one that I am looking to embrace.
I’ve recently resigned from my agency job to focus on being a bit more creative as I felt I wasn’t being creative anymore. I absolutely ADORE the idea of having an after-work routine. I have never painted, but perhaps I should have a go as an almost non-thinky chillout…
