Generally speaking, if it’s no-sew project, I’m in! But this one is for the kiddos.
This kids purse idea is genuinely so easy and perfect for toting around stuffies, craft supplies, and whatever else kids like to carry around with them. The best part about this kids no-sew purse idea though, is that kids can complete it on their own, start to finish. They may need a little bit of adult supervision, depending on their age, since it involves scissors. Grab a pair of old jeans and let’s get started.
P.S. This one can also be converted to a fanny pack if that feels more inline with your child.
Materials
- old pair of denim jeans with pockets (shorts or pants)*
- scrap fabric, yarn, or cord (for the handle)
- scissors
- (optional) paint and brush or markers for pouch decorating
*You can use any pair of pants or shorts with pockets. It doesn’t have to be denim.

How to Make a Kids No-Sew Purse
1. Using an old pair of pants or shorts with pockets, carefully cut one of the pockets out. Making sure not to cut into it.
You can make a tiny purse with the little watch pocket in the front or something bigger with the back pockets.
2. Tidy up the edges with scissors, cutting as close to the pocket edge as possible without cutting into it.
*If you want a flap on top, keep the material above the pocket. Otherwise, cut it off.
3. The final step is adding a handle and decorating the pouch with markers, paint, gems, etc.
To create the handle, you can use excess scraps from the pants and tack them on with a needle and thread.
Or create a hole on each end of the pocket pouch, thread yarn, cording, or along fabric scrap through the holes and knot the ends so the handle stays put. Like the below example.
For an added touch, try some felt ball cherries with 2 feet balls and some wire to poke through and make the stems.
Take it Further
If you want to turn your pouch into a fanny pack instead, you can use extra long cording that will wrap around the body, instead of making a small handle.
And that’s it for this kids project. The finished craft reminds me a little bit of the DIY denim clutch I made a while back. It does involve a sewing machine though, so it’s a little more involved.
