Delicious 3 Ingredient Blackberry Syrup

Blackberry syrup has so much flavor. It’s delicious and VERY easy to make. All you need are 3 ingredients and 10 minutes.

I’ve made simple syrup many times before, but this blackberry syrup is by far the best I’ve made.

It all started when I bought a snow cone machine not too long ago. Admittedly it was a panic buy before school is out for summer. I figured it would be a fun thing we could break out from time to time when we’re bored. But as it turns out, so far at least, we’ve used this snow cone machine A LOT.

And that’s why I’m sharing a blackberry syrup recipe. Making the syrup for snow cones is definitely an extra step. But when I looked into the ingredients for premade syrups for snow cones, it felt worth it to make my own. Especially if we’re gonna be eating snow cones pretty regularly this summer.

That’s not the only thing you can use this homemade blackberry simple syrup for though. It’s also great for cocktails, tea, sparkling water, on top of ice cream and even pancakes . Plus, you can make a little fresh jam with the leftover fruit as well, so nothing gets wasted.

Ingredients

  • 1 cup of water
  • 1 cup of sugar
  • 1 cup of blackberries
  • 1 lemon (optional)

You can use any kind of fruit you like for this syrup, not just blackberries. But the blackberry syrup is seriously delicious! So I highly recommend it.

If you do want to switch out the fruit for something else (or even a combo of several different fruits), you’ll just need a cup total of whatever fruit(s) you want to add.

How to make blackberry syrup

1. Start by adding water and sugar into a small pot or medium size sauce pan on medium heat.

2. Wash your blackberries thoroughly (or whatever fruit you are using) and then add them to the water and sugar mixture.

3. Let the blackberry syrup mixture simmer for 10 minutes and then remove from heat.

4. When it’s had a few minutes to cool, give it a taste to determine whether you want to add a squeeze of lemon to brighten up the flavor and push down a bit of the sweetness. This is really just a preference thing and may also depend on how fresh / ripe the fruit that you’re using.

5. Once the mixture has cooled for a few minutes, strain the mixture through a small sieve into a clean airtight jar. I usually use Weck jars, but I also like these.

Serve mixed into all kinds of drinks, on top of pancakes, ice cream, and of course snow cones for the prettiest little treat.

How long will this fruit simple syrup last?

Blackberry syrup or blackberry simple syrup like this one will last 1-2 weeks in the refrigerator (in an air tight container). And it can be frozen for up to 3 months. If you choose to freeze, be sure to switch to a plastic container (not glass).

Make jam with the leftovers

To make sure nothing goes to waste in this recipe, you can use the remaining chunky fruit remnants as a fresh fruit jam on toast, biscuits, even pb and j sandwiches. It’s delicious! I tried it on some biscuits I made for my son and YUM.

While the typical cook time for making jam without pectin is at least 20 minutes (in order to thicken it), the fruit remnants from this blackberry syrup recipe are usually pretty thick already. Refrigerate in an airtight container – this fresh jam should be consumed within 5-10 days.

Making blackberry snow cones

Snow cones are the perfect summer treat for kids. They cool you down on a hot day and have some tasty sugars in there too. What’s not to love. Would be great for birthday parties and end of school celebrations as well.

The snow cone machine we have is super easy to use and I imagine most of them are pretty straight forward.

Just plug it in, throw in basically any size ice (as long as it’s not huge blocks), flip the switch to on, and press the handle down. Shaved snow cone ice in seconds.

And then you just scoop it into a cone. The machine I have came with reusable plastic cones and some paper cones as well. Then just add a few spoonfuls of the homemade blackberry syrup on top.

You can sprinkle some edible flowers on top if you want to be extra fancy.

I just love fresh blackberries. They taste so good and have so many nutrients too. I made your blackberry syrup and it was so delicious! I used it over vanilla ice cream for now but I want that snowcone maker now. I am putting it on my birthday wish list!

Blackberry syrup is a delightful blend of tart and sweet, perfect for adding a refreshing burst of flavor to your drinks and desserts. Its rich, fruity taste pairs wonderfully with iced teas, lemonades, or as a topping for ice cream and pancakes. A must-have for berry lovers!
