Hair Tutorial // Go from Day to Night with this Messy Bun Faux Hawk (2 Ways)

A quick look through previous hair tutorials would suggest that I’m a big fan of buns of all kinds…everyday, fancy, and everything in between. And to be honest, I wasn’t certain that there was much more we could do with buns tutorial-wise…until Rachel came up with this little updo that can be worn half up or as a full faux hawk updo, which means it can go from day to night in just a few minutes.

Click through for the full tutorial.

The casual vibe of the half up version works well for daytime and the full updo is great for evenings. AND you can easily transition from one to the other…start the day with the half up faux hawk and after work, put the rest of your hair up for a hot date or drinks with friends.

Here’s how to recreate this 2-for-1 look in about 10 minutes…

DIY Hair Tutorial // Go from Day to Night with this Messy Bun Faux Hawk (2 Ways)

1. Half Up Messy Bun Faux Hawk

Start with wavy or textured hair and spritz with a texturizing spray all over. Then, lightly tease all of your hair.

Next, pull the top quarter of your hair into a small, rubber ponytail holder, looping it through and then wrapping the holder once more before all the hair has been pulled through. Use 2-3 bobby-pins to secure any pieces that aren’t sitting correctly.

Repeat this process on the next quarter of your hair and spray with hairspray to secure everything in place.

2. Updo Messy Bun Faux Hawk

And to really get that faux hawk vibe, you can add a couple more buns to get all of your hair up. You can create the look by following the steps above and then simply continuing the process through each of the last two quarters of your hair. Which will give you four buns total, running down the back of your head.

I like both options, but if I had to choose, the full updo (option 2) would be my pick because I love having my hair completely out of my face, when I can.

I think you’ll be pleasantly surprised by how easy this one if to try, Perfectionist You.

Love the half up! You could even do it with short hair, too!

Totally Kiersten. The half up version would be great for short hair.

Thanks Ciara Rose. Rachel did a great job with the hair, once again. 🙂

Would it work on straight hair? I love the finished look in the photos but I have very long (lower back length), straight hair that reluctantly holds a wave only briefly. I’m always looking for new things to do with it that are simple yet new and attractive.

Also, what kind of pins did you use?

Hi Chrissy. I don’t see why it wouldn’t work with super straight hair…I would just tease it before you get started, to give it a little bit of messy body. And we used premium bobby pins, like these: http://amzn.to/294TxA3. Hope that helps!

I really like both of the hairstyles. It definitely seems like you could start the day with the half up version and then pin the rest up for the evening

I tried this today and it didn’t come out nearly as cute!!! I have long, very fine, very thin hair!!!

Krystal Barton | July 26th, 2016 at 5:43 pm

Oh darn, Krystal. Did you tease it at all? That might help make it look fuller if you have fine hair.

It’s soo beautiful :D. Thanks, I will try this.
