A clever ice cream cone holder seems like the perfect end of summer project to try for the last few weeks of hot weather.
Labor Day may have already passed, BUT summer isn’t quite over yet. It’s still oh-so-hot here in Atlanta and anything that involves ice cream right now, still feels very appropriate for this time of year.
So, today I’m sharing this easy summer project for a DIY ice cream cone holder perfect for the final hot days before fall finally arrives. So grab a wood serving tray (or a scrap piece of wood) and get ready for a little way to serve up a whole lot of goodness, in just a couple of minutes.
You may remember seeing this ice cream cone holder in action from this end of summer party. It was a last minute addition, when I realized we needed some kind of tray for the ice cream cones and I literally whipped this up in less than 10 minutes the day of the event.
If you’re pretty decent with a drill, you’ll breeze though this project in no time.
Materials and Tools Needed
- scrap wood or wood serving tray / cutting board
- 2 table clamps
- drill
- 1/2 inch spade bit (or larger – depending on how low you want the ice cream cones to sit in the holes)
- sandpaper
How to Make a DIY Wood Ice Cream Cone Holder
1. Determine how many holes you want to put into the wood you are using and how far apart you want the holes. Then, clamp down the wood to keep it from moving around while drilling.
2. Next, using a spade bit, carefully drill the holes for each cone. Sandpaper the inside of each hole if needed. Wipe away any debris and it’s ready to use. That’s it! So simple, right?!
Need a wood board to use for this DIY ice cream cone holder idea?
I added a handful of my favorites above that would work really well (and they’re all under $50 too). Click any board above to shop these supplies.

P.S. If you’re wondering where the green ice cream cones came from…they’re homemade matcha waffle cones and they’re delicious if you want to try the recipe.
Do you have any big plans before the weather starts to cool down? And more importantly…what’s your favorite ice cream flavor of all time?!
