Wrap It Up: A Poncho Wrap Scarf DIY for Winter

Wrap It Up: A Poncho Wrap Scarf DIY for Winter #diy #poncho #winter #fashion #winterfashion Sewing
Turn a blanket into a cozy AF poncho wrap scarf (that looks nothing like a blanket when it’s finished – promise)!

I used a $20 plaid blanket from Target, leftover from my holiday outdoor entertaining post, to create a super warm and totally wearable piece in 30 minutes. Takes even less time than that if you leave the edges raw. Click through for the tutorial.

All you need to make your own poncho wrap scarf is…

  • blanket (this is the exact one I used)
  • scissors
  • straight pins or tailor’s chalk
  • measuring tape
  • sewing machine

How to make a poncho wrap scrap from a blanket…

Start by folding the blanket in half so the two fringe ends are touching each other at the bottom, as shown in the photo. Find the center and mark it on the fold with a straight pin or tailor’s chalk at the top and bottom of the blanket.

The blanket used for this project was 50×60, which is a little bigger than we needed. So, we cut 4 inches off from each side (as shown in photo) to make the sleeves hit at more of a 3/4 sleeve length. Totally optional step, but wanted to mention it. Also, to keep the pattern symmetrical we opted to cut 4 inches off each side instead of cutting 8 inches all off from one side.

Measure a 5 inch neck opening (2.5 inches from each side of the center mark at the top fold) and mark with straight pins.

Then, on the top layer of the blanket only, cut from the bottom middle point up diagonally to the first neck opening point. And then repeat with the other neck opening point.

Once you get to the top, cut out the back of the neckline, in a half circle shape no deeper than one inch (roughly).

Then, finish the edges (we opted to only finish the edges around the front and neckline – leaving the sides / arm areas with a raw edge) by folding the edge over twice and stitching across it with the sewing machine.

Once finished, there are several ways the poncho wrap scarf can be worn. You can put it on and leave it loose for a super casual look. You can add a belt (a belt you already have or scrap fabric from making the poncho – for a more tailored look). You can wrap the front around like a scarf around your neck. Or you can wrap the front around your neck and turn it kind of sideways for another look. SO many options for this one!

What do you think of the finished poncho? Who’s up for converting an existing blanket into one of these?! I’d love to know.
