Alright, if you’re looking for a super low budget costume idea that is basically free, this DIY pop tart costume is going to be your jam. It really just involves a large sheet of cardboard (mine was leftover from my big art shipment for this post), some paint, and a little rope (or heavy duty string).
If you can wrangle up those materials, you can make this costume for under $5! Here’s how to make your own…
Materials:
– large sheet of cardboard
– paint (house paint or acrylic)
– paint brush
– rope or heavy duty string
– glue gun
How To:
1. Start by painting the outside edges of the pop tart with with a light tan / brown paint. Paint 3-4 inches in from the edge all the way around. Apply a second coat once the first coat is dry.
2. Next, paint a pink squiggly blob (technical term) on the cardboard that loosely mimics the shape of icing on a pop tart. The more organic and asymmetrical the better. Just make sure that the edge of the ‘icing’ overlaps the crust that you painted in step 1, so the entire piece of cardboard is covered in paint.
3. Add highlights and lowlights to the crust and icing with paint.
4. Add colorful sprinkles, by painting tube shapes and adding highlights to some sprinkles for a more realistic look.
5. Once the paint is dry, add a rope neck strap to the back and a belt in the middle back to keep it secure. I attached the neck strap and belt with hot glue, which actually worked really well.
That’s it! Wear any comfortable outfit underneath and you’re ready to trick or treat in style. Or totally rock a costume contest.
I wore a chambray Madewell shirt // striped Fossil skirt // Jeffrey Campbell heels, in case you’re looking for a push in the outfit department.
