Last week, I mentioned that I would be teaching an online course soon, which is something I have been wanting to do for what feels like forever. And it is finally time time to release the details because you can sign up for the course right now. AND it’s only $20 (plus additional discount below with code).
I am pleased to announce that I’ve teamed up with Skillshare and will be teaching a course focusing on the ins and outs of awesome tutorials. *The official title is ‘The How To on How Tos: Creating Compelling Tutorials for Your Blog’ but I like to think of it as ‘Everything you Need to Know to Create a Share-Worthy Tutorial that will Spread like Wildfire’. My title was a little wordy, so we went in another direction. Ha! This class is meant for anyone that loves DIY projects (and I know you do), who is looking for a little (or a lot of) direction. Whether you are a professional blogger or a recreational DIYer, this class will teach you everything you need to know.
I have used tutorials to generate buzz for Paper & Stitch, get me into the pages of national (and international) print publications, and land some awesome freelance jobs. And now I’m sharing how I’ve done it via this online class on Skillshare so you can design awesome tutorials of your own! *Side Note: If you are not familiar with Skillshare already, they partner with teachers to produce amazing (and very affordable) online classes on a wide range of topics, like design, fashion & style, photography and more. More info on Skillshare here.
More Details
This class will cover all the basics for creating a beautiful, share-worthy tutorial from start to finish. And will include tips for styling the finished projects, getting press for your awesome DIYs, and a whole lot more. There will be video lessons, PDFs, and curated links. Here are some additional details…
Course Breakdown:
- The Basics: The Key Components to a Good, Share-Worthy Tutorial
- Coming up with an Original Tutorial Idea that will get you Noticed: This section will cover tips for coming up with a noteworthy tutorial idea/DIY project and help you find inspiration through specific exercises, if you’re having trouble coming up with something.
- The Ins and Outs of Shooting Tutorials (from photography to styling): Which will show you how to replicate the setup at home, that I use. And will also include behind the scenes content, that shows how a project was photographed and what it looks like in real life just outside of the frame (hint: messy).**Note: Photography info with not be technical in nature, but rather will discuss how to make the most out of what you have (camera-wise) and the kinds of photos that work best for tutorials.
- Tips & Tricks for Getting your Tutorial into the Hands of Editors and Influential Site Owners: Which will include suggestions for how to reach out to press (including a sample email pitch, which can used as a template), setting yourself up for press to start coming to you (instead of you having to go to them), and more.

Kelly @ Studio DIYGreat Erin! Looking forward to sharing my process with experienced crafters, like yourself, alongside students who aren’t as far a long. There is definitely room in this course for everyone to pick up new ideas, info on snagging press for tutorials, taking beautiful, styled photos of the in-process steps and finished project, etc.
