Make This: Giant Fringe Ornament DIY

Holiday DIY Ornament Decor

This week I’m officially getting into the holiday spirit. I know that I’ve posted a couple of DIY Christmas ideas already, so my toes have already been dipped in the Xmas pool. But NOW I’m moving full speed ahead on holiday projects, giveaways, and more…

I’ve been busy creating quite a few holiday DIYs for other sites recently (DIY Network, iVillage, and Curbly) and I’ll be sure to link to those projects here as they are posted. Starting today, with this giant mid-century ornament project I created for DIY Network. This was my first attempt at a piñata(ish) project and I am pretty addicted to making these now. It’s fun to dream up different shapes and make them from scratch (although they can be pretty time-consuming to make).

To complete this project, you’ll need mat board or cardboard, crepe paper, and a handful of other items. Full supplies list and instructions here.

When you’re finished, you can add a secret compartment to create a full-on holiday piñata OR keep it as-is and use it as a decorative mantle piece. I had it resting on a dresser in my office for a while and it worked great there too – so you can pretty much use it anywhere. You can see more photos of that set up (and view the full tutorial) right here.

What kinds of pieces are you planning to DIY for the holidays? Is there anything in particular that you’d like to see as a holiday tutorial?

I love the shape you chose! Vintage ornaments are my absolute favorite, and I think you did a great job blending the old and the new!

Thanks Kel. You are the piñata queen, so I definitely appreciate that. And yes- you definitely need to buy some fringe scissors. I’ve been telling you that forever! 🙂

Obsessed!!!! This turned out SO great, Britt! I love the colors you used, and the little hint of gold! Also, this makes me want to buy fringe scissors STAT.

Thanks Becca. Yes, you could easily hang this piece because it’s so lightweight. Good thinking.

!!! This is SO cute! I love this idea so much. It would look amazing to make a few to hang over a mantle or something like that.
