Color Blocked (Christmas) Vibes: How to Make DIY Velvet Ornaments

I had so many holiday DIYs to share this year, I’m somehow still posting them days before Christmas. Ha! But this is the last one. So, I figured I should go out on the holiday DIY train with a color blocked send off. It only seemed right, with the hashtag and everything.

So, here are some color blocked velvet ornaments that can be sewn in just a few minutes. They were made the same way as the DIY color blocked pillows I shared recently, with one small difference. Other than the size of course, a small velvet loop was added to the fabric as it was being sewn together so that it can be easily hung on the tree. Easy and can be.

Here’s what that step by step process looks like…

Materials

• scrap fabric in at least 2 colors (mine is velvet, but you can use any fabric)
• spools of thread in colors that match your fabric
• scissors
• 1 handful of poly filling (pillow stuffing) per 3 inch ornament
• wooden dowel (to poke filling into pillow corners)
• sewing machine

Instructions

1. Start by cutting out pieces of fabric for the front and back of your ornament. No template necessary for this one, since they’re so small. If you want any color blocked pieces to show on the front side, like mine, be sure to cut those pieces individually to form the full shape and then the back piece separately. The photo will probably be the best reference for what I mean.
2. Next, sew the front pieces together, if color blocking. You can do this by placing the two pieces for the front of the ornament right sides together into your sewing machine and sewing them together with a straight line – be sure to backstitch and the beginning and end.
3. Then place on top of the back of the fabric, again right sides facing in towards each other. And add a small loop of velvet fabric, at the top, sandwiched in between the two layers, for the loop. You want the actual loop to be tucked in, with the tail ‘end’ poking out, so when you turn in inside out after sewing, the loop will be on the correct side.
4. Next, sew a straight line down all edges, but leaving a small opening unsewn for turning it inside out and adding filling later. Be sure to backstitch at the beginning and end of each edge.
5. Trim excess fabric from the edges, as shown in the photo. Then turn the fabric inside out.
6. Add poly filling through the small opening and use a wooden dowel, if necessary, to poke filling the corners and hard to reach spots.
7. Hand stitch the opening closed with a needle and thread and hang on the tree.

These guys really are just tiny versions of the color blocked velvet pillows we made earlier in the month and I kind of love how tiny they are. Definitely a colorful addition to the tree…They’d also be cute gift toppers.
