Style Files: New Fall Style Guide + How to Make a Giant DIY Mood Board Organizer

I’ve been loving sharing my style guides with you guys each month and today I have a brand new one to share that is focused on the first month of fall!

Only instead of my typical guide, I’m stepping up my game and turning this one into a giant (but still pretty easy) DIY, with a little help from 3M and their line of ScotchBlue™Pre-Taped Painter’s Plastic.

This month’s guide doubles as a giant DIY mood board organizer (it’s taller than I am) for the studio. And it’s all dressed up for fall with my favorite color combo of the moment, blush and rust. Plus, I snuck in a side of organization and storage to boot to make it all the more practical…

There’s a copper caddy, for books that I’m inspired by at the moment, and a little hanging area for scissors, etc to keep important items handy. Plus, I can move it around if I want to and repaint it easily when I find a new color combo I love…

Here’s how to make your own giant DIY mood board organizer for fall.

Materials for Giant DIY Mood Board Organizer

• large 4×8 sheet of plywood (cut into a shape if desired and already painted with a base coat)
• ScotchBlue™Pre-Taped Painter’s Plastic (to protect the floor from paint splatters and drips + for the color blocking)
• paint and paint brush
• wire basket (mine is from here)
• screws
• eyelet hooks
• ‘s’ hooks
• 1-2 feet of rope (for a hang line to use for ‘s’ hooks)

Note: Follow all ScotchBlue™ Painter’s Plastic package instructions for proper surface cleaning and prep, adhesion and removal.

Instructions

1. I already had a big piece of painted plywood leftover from this project, but you can cut a new piece into any shape you’d like. Since the wood I was using was already cut into a house shape (apparently, I’m still stuck on that house-shaped motif) and painted with a base coat, I went straight into the color blocking. So lets start from there… Use ScotchBlue™Pre-Taped Painter’s Plastic to create a diagonal line across the surface, as shown in the photo. It’s available in 2 sizes in a loaded dispenser and you apply it the same way to apply regular painter’s tape. Press down firmly over the tapes surface with your fingers to make sure the tape is secure.

Cut the end of the Painter’s Plastic with the attached blade and unfold the Painter’s Plastic to cover the freshly painted bottom of the mood board. For more tips and tricks on masking, etc visit the “How to Mask for Painting” section on ScotchBlue.com.

2. Next, paint the top portion of the plywood board. Apply multiple coats if necessary.

3. Once the paint has completely dried, it’s time to remove the ScotchBlue™Pre-Taped Painter’s Plastic – slowly at a 45° angle, pull the tape back onto itself for best results. P.S. If you don’t get around to this part right away, it’s okay! This product can be removed cleanly up to 14 days after painting, so you’re good to go.

4. Next, add a hanging basket by measuring and marking off spots for two screws to go in order to hang the basket from. Make sure the marks are level before drilling.

5. You can also add a simple hang line, my measuring and marking where you’d like the two end points to be (again, make sure its level before drilling). Pre-drill the holes and then screw in eyelet screws.

6. Add a rope through the eyelets and knot them on each side. Hang items with S hooks. Done! Now you can add inspirational style guide items, books, office supplies, etc.

I’ve been keeping this big ol’ guy resting against the wall, right by my desk. So it’s always nearby when I need it, and out of the way when I don’t.
