Curly hair updos can be tricky. But this one is easy and cute!
In the past, I’ve shared everything from double buns to reverse crown braids in the hair tutorial department, but up to now all of our models have had relatively straight hair. This rope twist updo is different though -its for all the curly haired readers out there. Said in my best smooth jazz DJ voice. 🙂 And I’m excited to share it.
It works really well for a casual or fancy occasion, and no one will be the wiser that it only took a few minutes to do. Click through for the step by step instructions on this easy as pie hair tutorial.
Curly Hair Updo: Rope Twist Updo
Materials
- bobby pins
- elastic hair ties
Instructions
Step 1: Section your hair off into three sections.
And secure just the section in the middle (back of the head) with a rubber band. Then twist into a low bun and secure with bobby pins.
Step 2: Then, take one of the sections that is still down, separate it into two parts and twist each part separately.
Next, twist the two parts together, as shown in the photo. Wrap that section around the bun and secure with bobby pins.
Step 3: Repeat step 2 with the opposite side and secure with bobby pins once again. Add hairspray, if desired.
That’s it! So easy, right? When we were putting this tutorial together, our model Stephanie mentioned she was happy to have such an easy tutorial like this that has some detail and dimension to it.
Can you try this tutorial without curly hair?
Definitely! This hair tutorial can work for other hair types as well (not just curly). You may need to add some texturizer to help with the rope twists first though.

Amy AlexanderWhen I see hairstyles like this I am so glad I have long hair to try it out on!
AleksandraI was thinking about cutting my waist length naturally curly hair really short lately. After seeing this post, I have some new inspiration for my hair. I rarely wear it down, a bun or pullback twist is my go to, I really don’t like hair in my face, this style is great! Thanks for the share.
mccandlessquiltsThe IG Stories tutorial that we did a while back would have been perfect, Michelle. It works for any hair length.
BrittniNow I wish my hair was longer again. This is beautiful! Do you have anything for short curly hair?
